The debut was a little more instant to me I listened once and I was right in there, with Amor Fati being the strongest song (and I still think the best song Washed Out has done). Paracosm has taken a few listens to really hit me, but it has hit me ALMOST as hard as the debut.

A limited If Washed Out’s first album Within and Without lived up to the band’s name, and as the band’s Ernest Greene has said, sounded monochromatic, the follow-up, 2013’s Paracosm, sounds like a 21-gun salute fired from cannons filled with brightly colored confetti in comparison. Washed Out is one of my favorite artists. That being said, this was a DJ set, and honestly, I wished it was just a regular Washed Out show. The DJ set left something to be desired. The transitions were abrupt and too frequent. I also thought this would be more of a chillwave dance show, but instead it was actually more of a house set. Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Perry, Georgia, USA who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative. There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Georgian ‘chillwave’ alumnus Ernest Greene continues this trend on Paracosm, his sophomore full-length under the Washed Out moniker, but perhaps that should come as no surprise.
